In the UK, the term “sewer” means an underground pipe that collects rainwater from hard surfaces. Both underground and above-ground systems of pipes carry this water away. The terms “sewer” and “surface water drainage” are used interchangeably. However, there is some variation in policy across different regions. Gutter gullies

Gutter gullies are an integral part of your drainage system. These drains take excess runoff from your kitchen, bathroom and laundry and send it to a sewer. They are usually capped with a grate so that no external debris gets into them. They help prevent the buildup of grime and are a necessary part of your underground drainage system.

There are two main types of gullies: roadside gullies and domestic gullies. Roadside gullies are responsible for draining a larger area than a domestic gully. These gullies are usually made of concrete or HDPE. They are used to flush rainwater, surface water and grey wastewater. They are installed under a downspout and are comprised of a grating and a water trap.

If you notice that your guttering doesn’t drain into the sewer, you might be in a soakaway system.

This type of system collects surface water from your roof and gutters, which would otherwise flood the area around your house. The water is then channeled into a drainage system. This system may be a septic tank, a soakaway, or the public sewer. In any case, it must not flow into a foul drain.

The problem with connecting your gutter to the sewer system is that it can overflow, causing a sewage backup. This is dangerous for public health. The water is then released into the ground, where it becomes runoff and eventually ends up in rivers and lakes. In most states, however, it is illegal to connect the gutter outlet to the sewer, and you may face hefty fines.

Downspouts

Downspouts are a great way to divert rainwater away from the foundations of your building. They can consist of a straight bend or a complicated set of pipework, leading to a sewer, runoff water drain, or seepway. The first downspouts were installed on the Tower of London in 1240. The Tower was covered in whitewash, so it was important to protect it from rain. Some low-rise gargoyles feature decorative heads to add a decorative touch.

In addition to directing water away from the building, downspouts also help protect the environment. While it may be tempting to just let the water collect at the base of the wall, this is not a good idea. It’s better to channel the water into the public drainage system. Moreover, downpipes should be installed in compliance with local regulations.

In the UK, most homes send water to a water company-operated sewer system. When the downpipe empties, the water should flow into a gully that is almost level with the ground. Gully materials are designed to avoid the development of odours, and most of them are manufactured with a bend that is buried under the ground.
